Renaissance Speakers Sweep District Contests!

Renaissance Speakers made history this last weekend when two members won the two District Contests. Never before has a single club in District 52 produced winners in both of the Spring contests.

Lance Miller led the way on May 15, 2020 by besting five other contestants in winning the Humorous Speech contest. Each contestant presented a humorous speech that was thematic in nature and not a monologue (series of one-liners).

The next day, May 16, Tremale Berger followed with his victory in the International Speech contest. Each of the six contestants presented a five- to seven- minute speech on any subject they chose.

This year’s contests were also extraordinary in that they took place on a virtual platform due to the ongoing pandemic.

Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. This year, more than 30,000 Toastmasters participated. Competition began with club contests, and winners continued competing through the Area, Division and District levels.

Winners of the District level International Speech Contest will proceed to the region quarterfinal level. Following region quarterfinals, winners will advance to the semifinals for a chance to take part in the World Championship of Public Speaking®. For many amateur speakers, this competition is the opportunity of a lifetime. Past winners have used this accolade to become prominent paid speakers, delivering keynotes and speeches around the globe.

By winning the District level Humorous Speech contest, Lance has advanced as far as anyone can go.

Tremale, however, will continue his journey to becoming the coveted World Champion of Public Speaking by next competing in the region quarterfinal level.

Congratulations Lance and Tremale!
