“Renaissance” is French for “rebirth” and going back to Latin means, “to be born again.”
In history, the Renaissance was a period of intellectual transformation, generally viewed as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern era.
Beginning in Italy, and spreading to the rest of Europe by the 16th century, the influence of the Renaissance period affected literature, philosophy, art, politics, science, religion, and other aspects of intellectual inquiry. And judging by the diverse speeches presented in our Toastmasters club, all those are subjects which have finally culminated in a pinnacle of cultural articulation within the Renaissance Speakers.
OK, although I jest about being a “pinnacle of cultural articulation,” our club does represent a friendly association of speakers and presenters founded upon a guiding principal of helping others by way of a “Spirit of Play.”
Further to that, our club comprises all manner of speakers – from the newest beginners to top professionals – who can be counted upon to speak about literature, philosophy, art, politics, science, religion and other aspects of intellectual inquiry, as well as anything that might be whimsical or amusing. In other words, as a group, the Renaissance Speakers do represent a harmonic of the true nature of what many have long hoped for in history: a renaissance for mankind.
Although, per Toastmasters International statistics, the Renaissance Speakers are deemed an unusually competent club amidst the network of Toastmasters groups that span the globe, the most universal comment that is oft repeated week after week, year after year, from countless guests who visit our club for the first time, is a variation of “You guys are fun!”
In brief, the Renaissance Speakers is an award-winning and prominent Toastmasters club hosted by the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International in Hollywood, California.
The group helps members become more accomplished public speakers so they may then more effectively deliver presentations to further their business or artistic careers. And for other members, to help them to better support and expand their community service aspirations.
Heck, I might as well note that there are members who enjoy the club for no more than the friendship and camaraderie! (Wise choice for those fun-loving friendlies).
So, who are the individuals that make up the Renaissance Speakers? In a word, they are men and women of all ages who wish to improve their public speaking and leadership skills while having fun.
And make no mistake about it, there are plenty of opportunities to develop and improve “leadership” chops: whether by taking responsibility for various parts of each week’s meeting; taking responsibility for an entire meeting; or on an increasingly higher gradient of leadership responsibility, helping to administer the group as a club officer; and above that there are many more volunteer opportunities pertaining to helping to guide other clubs.
So, why would anyone visit the Renaissance Speakers?
In short, the Renaissance Speakers is about communication, leadership and enlightenment. Enlightening oneself and enlightening others, all by way of more effective communication and expanding one’s area of influence and responsibility.
Would that include you?
Visit us as a guest any Sunday, from 9:00 to noon, and join the fun as we “Let the Renaissance continue!”
