This Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Renaissance Speakers: The Story of Josephine Baker

This Sunday, our theme is The Story of Josephine Baker (1906-1975), hosted by the Meeting Toastmaster A. J. Herran.

Josephine Baker was a dancer and singer who became wildly popular in France during the 1920s. She also devoted much of her life to fighting racism.

She was the first African American woman to star in a motion picture (Siren of the Tropics 1927) to perform with an integrated cast at the American concert hall, and one of the first African American entertainers who achieved acclaim both in movies and on the stage.

This remarkable woman was also aided the French Resistance during World War II and was awarded many medals.

And that’s just an overview.

Find out much more at our meeting when we have:

  • Prepared speeches by our members,
  • Helpful and constructive coaching of the speeches, and
  • Impromptu speaking practice.
